Social Action News

SOCIAL ACTION NEWS

(January, 2008)

I want to thank the many volunteers I have worked with over the past seven years, as chair of the Social Action Committee. I have recently passed the reins to Scott Krasner. Thank you Scott! Please assist him as much as you did me.

We currently are housing and feeding the homeless for three nights January 19th, 26th, and February 2nd during Operation Deepfreeze / Project Hospitality. We need assistance with meal making, cash donations to supplement food and other items, long heavy cotton socks (Costco or Sam’s Club have the best prices) and heavy cotton t-shirts. Make checks payable to Congregation Or Chadash and specify Operation Deepfreeze. You may drop items at my house or the congregation office. Call me (748-7687) for more information.

Thank you to all who continue to bring food donations to Friday night services or to the Temple; we encourage others to participate in this mitzvah.

Or Chadash has a strong history of Tikkun Olam, helping to repair the world. Our children learn by example when we include them in social action programs, through Or Chadash or the community.

Shalom, and have a good and giving 2008.
Andi Elkins

TIHAN HAS AN UNPRECEDENTED NEED FOR CARETEAM MEMBERS

This successful program by the Tucson Interfaith HIV/Aids Network provides compassionate, non-medical, in-home help to a CarePartner living with HIV or AIDS. Each team is assigned to work with a person living with HIV. Help may include visits, errands, shopping, light housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation and companionship for medical appointments, and respite for primary caregivers. We also serve CarePartners in hospital and hospice settings.

When our CarePartners have needs beyond our abilities, we make referrals to appropriate agencies. In addition to supporting their CarePartner, members of each CareTeam meet regularly to support one another emotionally and spiritually.

Care Team Members typically volunteer 2–4 hours each week. Please sign up for one of the upcoming orientations and then participate in the all day training.

SANDWICH MAKING FOR
THE WORKING HOMELESS

Congregation Or Chadash is assisting The Primavera Foundation in their Primavera Works program—the extended men's homeless shelter where the 25 men work in the community Monday through Friday.

We provide lunches for two days each month and need volunteers to shop, pack and deliver 50 lunches. Sack lunch packing is 11:00 a.m., on the 2nd Sunday of every month at the office.

Call Fay Roos at 298-4403 to volunteer for sandwich making. If you can shop or deliver, contact Diane Kerrihard at 629-0193.
