   SOCIAL ACTION NEWS
By Fran Braverman, Social Action Co-Chair

As the new committee co-chair, I am excited to tell you about opportunities to make a difference in our community. TIHAN (Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network) is sponsoring POZ CAFE on January 19th. Volunteers are needed from 8:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Contact Soozie Hazan at suezq404@aol.com by clicking here or 887-5268.

We are dialoging with the Jewish Federation LGBT Inclusion Project on ways to collaborate with the congregation. Marc Paley, program director, is a long-time congregation member and we look forward to working with him.

Operation Deep Freeze is underway to help those needing shelter from the cold. Please consider volunteering on January 2nd or January 16th or contributing gently used blankets, jackets and other articles of clothing. Contact Elaine Jones at ejones1952@comcast.net by clicking here, or 241-4099.

Project Isaiah collected 1245 pounds of food providing 972 meals. Throughout the year, the congregation collects food for the Interfaith Community Services food bank and we help the Jewish Federation collect small cans of low-sodium tomato juice for Homer Davis students. When you come to services or are near the office, please drop off your donations for these two worthy projects. Andi Elkins leads the Primavera Lunch Program on the second Sunday of each month. If you can assist on one of these Sunday mornings, contact Andi at andelk2001@cox.net by clicking here or 748-7687.

The Social Action Committee’s work supports the Jewish tenets of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) and Gemilut Chasidim (Acts of Loving Kindness) and fills the soul with a warm feeling. Call me at SocialAction@OrChadash-Tucson.org by clicking here, or 886-0030 to join us.

What Is BOGO: BUY ONE, GET ONE? ...
Help our community food banks restock their food pantries during this tough economic time. When you see a “BOGO” sale on any food items at a grocery store, purchase one item and bring the second item to the Or Chadash office, 3939 N. Alvernon Way.

Perishable and non-perishable food items are accepted. All donations benefit Interfaith Community Services and the Community Food Bank. Please contact Skye Gentry at the office, 512-8500, or office@orchadash-tucson.org for more information.

OPERATION HOSPITALITY ...
Saturday, January 15th 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El

Operation Hospitality is a program organized among various organizations to help homeless men from Salvation Army by cooking and serving dinner, breakfast and lunch while giving them a place to sleep a few nights out of the winter months while also providing full meals. Volunteers are not required to stay overnight.

Please contact Barbara Champion at SocialAction2@orchadash-tucson.org, by clicking here, if you would like to volunteer.

HELP FOR OUR CHILDREN

Homer Davis Elementary School is a severely impoverish Tucson school. The Jewish community has teamed up to provide support that includes ongoing food drives and tutoring. If you are interested in helping our Tucson children build their future, contact Brenda Landau, blandau@jfsa.org.

WHAT’S JEWISH ABOUT AFFORDABLE HOUSING?

An educational program about the need and value of affordable housing will be hosted Monday, February 16th, 7:15 p.m. at Congregation Anshei Israel. Come and learn about the need for and value of affordable housing in our community. To RSVP or for more information, contact Josh Protas at the Jewish Community Relations Council, jprotas@jfsa.org or 577-9393 ext 103.

MITZVAH OPPORTUNITIES

Offer your time and perform a Mitzvah for one of the following programs:

      1.   Make lunches for the working homeless of the Primavera Shelter for Men
      2.   Make and serve dinner, breakfast and lunch for the Salvation Army’s homeless at Operation Deep Freeze on November 29th or January 9th. PLEASE NOTE THE JANUARY DATE CHANGE.

If you are interested in volunteering in one or both of these programs, or want to join the Social Action Committee, please contact Social Action Chair, SocialAction@OrChadash-Tucson.org.

MAKE A FRIEND

Be a Friendly Visitor with a senior or disabled person through Interfaith Community Services or at Handmaker Jewish Services. You’ll brighten someone’s life and you’ll enrich your own life by visiting with a recipient. Arrange visits on your schedule. Contact ICS, 297-6049 for details or Ann Lopez at Handmaker, 547-6001 or alopez@handmaker.org.

BECOME A PENPAL

Become a caring pen pal with ePals’ eMentoring literacy program, In2Books. On your own time, right from your desk, correspond with a third through fifth grade student via online letters about important issues in five books you will read together throughout the school year. It only takes a few hours a month from September to June.

To ensure the safety of our students, all pen pals will need to pass a standard background check ($6 processing fee applies).

To learn more or sign up to be a pen pal, visit www.in2books.com/penpal08 by clicking here .

JEWISH COMMUNITY DIAPER DRIVE

Honor the tradition of giving Tzedakah on Purim by donating diapers to help the Southern Arizona Community Diaper Bank. A healthy change of diapers for a baby costs approximately $100 per month. Consider a gift of $18, which will purchase 100 diapers or bring unopened packs of baby and/or adult diapers to Congregation Or Chadash (3939 N. Alvernon Way). Diapers will be collected until March 20th and will be distributed through the Southern Arizona Community Diaper Bank. See diaperbank.org by clicking here for more information. .

1st RATE, 2nd HAND THRIFT STORE

Volunteers and donations are always welcome at the 1st Rate, 2nd Hand Thrift Store (5252 E. Speedway).

Based on a percentage of volunteer hours worked, profits from the store are distributed to the volunteer’s agency. So, volunteer your time and effort to help Or Chadash.

Also, the Thrift Store always accepts any type of item. Please support the Thrift Store with your donations, volunteer hours or by buying items for your personal pleasure.

For more information, call Patty Vallance at 250-8113.

TIHAN HAS AN UNPRECEDENTED NEED FOR CARETEAM MEMBERS

This successful program by the Tucson Interfaith HIV/Aids Network provides compassionate, non-medical, in-home help to a CarePartner living with HIV or AIDS. Each team is assigned to work with a person living with HIV. Help may include visits, errands, shopping, light housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation and companionship for medical appointments, and respite for primary caregivers. We also serve CarePartners in hospital and hospice settings.

When our CarePartners have needs beyond our abilities, we make referrals to appropriate agencies. In addition to supporting their CarePartner, members of each CareTeam meet regularly to support one another emotionally and spiritually.

Care Team Members typically volunteer 2–4 hours each week. Please sign up for one of the upcoming orientations and then participate in the all day training.

Call 299-66547 for more information, or email Dave@tihan.org

JEWISH COMMUNITY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Please join members of Or Chadash as we team up with other Jewish agencies and synagogues to help build a home for a low-income family. Let’s connect our hands with education and advocacy by taking the opportunity to support our community and shed light on the issues of poverty and affordable housing.

If you are interested, please call Josh Protas at the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona, 577-9393 or email
jprotas@jfsa.org.

ICS (Interfaith Community Services) NEWS
(Formerly known as the Northwest Interfaith Center, ICS creates connections between faith communities and volunteers to serve seniors, disabled persons, and individuals in financial crisis.)

ICS Faith in Action News

“ICS creates connections between faith communities and volunteers to serve seniors, disabled persons and individuals in financial crisis.”

East Side ICS Office Volunteers URGENTLY Needed: Volunteer receptionists are urgently needed at our East Side office for one day a week. Hours are 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Training provided. Contact Terri Patt-Smith at 297-6049.

Holiday Food Bags: Be a blessing to many families! Pick up an empty bag at our 2820 W. Ina Road office or call us at 297-6049 to have bags delivered to your faith community, fill it with groceries (we even give you a list of needed items) and return to our office anytime until December 19th.

Holiday Gifts of Love Program: We have begun taking names of people who want to “adopt” a family for Christmas. Call Barbara at 297-6049 for details and to sign up.

Health Advocacy Interviewers Are URGENTLY Needed in Central and East Tucson: If you have experience in the medical field or as a social worker, counselor, police officer or member of the clergy, or simply enjoy gleaning information from people, we have a place for you. By interviewing recipients and completing evaluations, interviewers play a vital role in providing services. This is a great chance to help your vulnerable neighbors in need.

Caregiver Relief: Spend an hour or two with a homebound recipient while the primary caregiver takes a break. This is a good way to meet interesting people. Training provided.

Handy Helpers Needed: Groups or individuals interested in sharing their skills with household repair and yard work needed. Homebound seniors often are no longer able to do necessary repairs around the house or maintain their yard. Volunteers providing this service can choose when and where they work. Areas that need coverage include: east of I-10 and south of River, east of Alvernon, to Irvington and Houghton. Training provided.

Visit www.icstucson.org by clicking here for more information or call 297-6049 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
