Social Action Committee Report Nov., 2004
by Andi Elkins

L'shana Tovah. Let this be a new beginning for us all. We are busily working for the community’s betterment in several ways. Our on-going programs to feed the homeless continue, and we can always use more people who wish to help with the sandwich making and the soup kitchen. Operation Hospitality/Deepfreeze is coming up.

We have just completed our food collection for Project Isaiah, and we thank all of you who contributed food or money to this cause. We will continue collecting food at Friday night services, so please bring your canned goods and non-perishables.

Make A Difference Day is now over, and we were able to assist in improving the living conditions of one of Tucson's elderly indigent. Thank you all who gave of your time and energy.

The literacy program is starting with four volunteers training to work with disadvantaged youths who need help developing reading skills. This program will help youths aged 8–17, all of whom are currently detained at the Juvenile Court Center. Teaching these children to read will help them by giving them a better chance for success. It will help the community, as children with knowledge and the ability to help themselves will be less likely turn to a life of crime, and it will help you to know that you have touched someone in need and improved the quality of our community.
