Mitzvah Committee
The Mitzvah Committee welcomes Harriet Kronman as the new co-chair with Diane Kerrihard. Many thanks to Suzie Hazan, the outgoing co-chair, for her years of dedication. Rabbi Louchheim created the Mitzvah Committee in 1998 to enrich the Rabbi’s support for our congregants by offering the necessary day-to-day support required during and after such life cycle events as birth, illness, and death. The Committee’s focus is in the areas of New Baby, Caring Calls, Transportation, Visits, and Bereavement (Shiva and Chevra Kadisha).
A new idea the Committee is implementing is that of keeping in touch with our congregation’s college students as they go off to school. Working in conjunction with the Membership Committee and Sisterhood, we will arrange to send them “care packages” at Rosh HaShanah, and at Passover for those who cannot return home for Seder. If you have children heading off to college this year, please call Paula at the office and give her their address so we can stay in touch.
The Mitzvah Committee is planning two different sessions for its members to instruct and advise them about the committee’s activities. The first will be for those who wish to participate in the Mitzvah of Chevra Kadisha, the burial society within Or Chadash that tends to the rituals of the deceased. Rabbi Louchheim and Marcia Louchheim will lead this session in August or early September. In the fall, the Committee will have several sessions discussing in detail the “how-to” of hospital visits, and of bereavement procedures.

STRENGTHENING OUR
CARING COMMUNITY
Rabbi Louchheim has been working with
Samuel and Marilyn Devore, LynnRae
Lowe, Betsy Sandlin with Interfaith Community
Services, and Temple Chai in
Scottsdale to strengthen our Caring Community
network that is present for our
congregants in times of simcha and sorrow.
Tremendous strides have been made to
create both a system and an opportunity for
everyone who needs, or wishes to provide,
assistance in simcha or loss, reaching out to
congregants in a helpful and heartfelt
manner. Our Caring Community’s goal is
to honor the recipient, the volunteer, and
the staff and clergy of Or Chadash in all
our activities.
At a recent meeting of the Caring
Community, Rabbi Louchheim described
the congregation as a pyramid, emphasizing
that "we need to be sure the base is
strong.” The Caring Community of Congregation
Or Chadash is that base, and has
been since our inception. Through its many
incarnations as Mitzvah Committee and
several other names, this is the volunteer
community within Or Chadash that has
always been present to serve everyone in
our congregation in times of need.
Our Caring Community has sprung
into high gear. We have revamped our
systems and procedures to allow everyone
who has the time and desire to be a vital
part of the mitzvah of helping others. We
have created a new intake form to identify
your interests and time to be sure your
desires and the congregation’s needs are
being respected. These forms are available
at the office or you can have one emailed to
you by calling Eileen at the office, 512-
8500. LynnRae Lowe will follow up after
your form is received.
Please consider becoming a member
of this Caring Community as we learn
together to serve our congregation in times
of joy, in times of need, in times of grief.
As we serve in this way, we insure that the
base of our pyramid is strong, that it is
made of the bedrock of our membership,
and that by serving each other we
strengthen the bonds of fellowship as we
exemplify the highest principles of our
tradition.
